What is Skin Rejuvenation and How Does It Work?

Skin rejuvenation includes a variety of treatments designed to restore your skin from any damage.
Skin damage can be due to sun exposure, an underlying medical condition, or normal signs of aging.
In this article, we’ll be discussing what skin rejuvenation is and how it works.

What is skin rejuvenation?

Skin rejuvenation is what you call methods designed to improve the appearance of your skin, including skincare products, treatments, and in-office procedures.
The goal of all skin rejuvenation methods is to reveal young-looking and smoother skin.

Many factors affect skin health.
Factors affecting the skin can be acne, pollution, aging, sunlight, sensitive skin, enlarged pores, lack of hygiene, or genetics.
As a result, you may experience wrinkles, redness, hyperpigmentation, clogged pores, sagging skin, acne scars, and dull skin.

For people with weakened immune systems, prone to scarring, known cold sores, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, it is most important to consult with a professional before choosing to undergo rejuvenation treatment.

Types of Skin rejuvenation

Chemical peels

Chemical peels can be used on your face, hands, or neck.
It targets acne, scars, clogged pores, sunburn, fine lines, wrinkles, and rough patches.
For this treatment, acid is used to remove the damaged outer layer of skin.
There are levels of chemical peels:

  1. Mild chemical peels: This is a treatment that uses mild solutions such as alpha-hydroxy acids, glycolic acids, or fruit enzymes.
This treatment only penetrates the outer layer of the skin.
  2. Deep chemical peels: Deep chemical peels reach the deeper layers of the skin. Some treatments involve exercise and may require anesthesia.

Microdermabrasion is a painless, non-invasive facial that deeply cleanses and exfoliates.
Kills dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and stimulates collagen growth.
This treatment improves fine lines, blemishes, and dark spots.
It also unclogs clogged pores!
Microdermabrasion facials usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour and are performed in medical aesthetic clinics.
Microdermabrasion provides instant gratification and results are immediately visible.

Types of microdermabrasion

  1. Crystal microdermabrasion

In microdermabrasion, the device sprays a layer of fine crystals on the skin.
This causes its surface to be slightly worn or “polished”.
Dead skin cells and crystals are immediately sucked away in the same device.

  1. Diamond tip microdermabrasion

This version of microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped device that gently grinds and exfoliates.
Dead skin cells are sucked into the phone.
Diamond tip microdermabrasion is safer to use near the eyes or in sensitive areas.

Treatment with botulinum toxin type A(Botox)

Botulinum toxin is a treatment known to weaken certain muscles by blocking nerves.
In skin care products, it smoothes facial wrinkles.
Depending on the content of the treatment, the effect can last from 3 to 12 months.
If a person is being treated with Botox, some side effects may include bruising, pain, and swelling at the injection site Botox is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are known to help restore volume and fullness to the face.
They can also help smooth facial lines.
This treatment can help delay the signs of aging without the need for cosmetic procedures such as facelifts, brow, or eye lifts.
Some of the results of this treatment include softening of wrinkles, improvement in the appearance of scars, and removal or reduction of shadows on the lower eyelid.

Intense pulsed light therapy(IPL)

Intense pulsed light therapy is similar to laser resurfacing.
It also uses light to evaporate skin cells and repair sunburn, fine lines, texture issues, and hyperpigmentation.
However, IPL uses many wavelengths to hit many targets, rather than using separate beams for a single target.
IPL benefits the skin by absorbing excess pigment, especially red and brown.
This also stimulates collagen production.
During the procedure, you may feel a slight tingling sensation, as if your skin is being pulled by a rubber band.
Intense pulsed light therapy usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
You may need up to six treatments per month to get the desired results.
Your skin may become sensitive for a few days, but you can return to your normal daily activities immediately.

Microneedling is a well-known treatment for stimulating elastin and collagen production.
When a person goes through this process, some substance gets applied to the skin.
These can include hyaluronic acid or ascorbic acid.
This is used before or after treatment so it can penetrate deep into the skin.
The professional will then use an instrument that has a fine-tipped needle on the skin.
This procedure is known to be painless and with minimal risk.

The feel of micro-needling is similar to a tattoo.
Unlike the tattoo gun, however, a dermapen only goes through each area once.
For the best and most consistent results, micro-needling every other month is recommended.
The healing process usually takes only about 24 hours after each treatment.

Aging, sun exposure, skin diseases, lifestyle, environment, and genetics can all take a toll on your skin.
Fortunately, there are as many skin rejuvenation programs available as there are skin blemishes.
Even better, many jobs can be done with minimal discomfort and nominal downtime so it’s better to find one that suits you.

Laser resurfacing

This skin rejuvenation method utilizes lasers to repair facial blemishes such as birthmarks, warts, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.
It focuses a beam of energy directly on a single target.

The energy stimulates collagen production, which enhances skin elasticity and imparts a smooth, radiant appearance.
It works by evaporating the top layers of the skin and heating the deeper layers.

There are two types of laser resurfacing:

1. Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing

CO2 resurfacing is considered the gold standard for laser resurfacing.
Carbon dioxide laser treatment creates small pores on the surface of the skin that promote the body’s healing response and the production of collagen.
CO2 resurfacing is ideal for patients seeking significant results.
Recovery from CO2 resurfacing can take up to two weeks, during which time the patient may experience swelling, redness, and slight crusting.

2. Erbium Laser Resurfacing

This form of laser treatment is similar to carbon dioxide resurfacing.
However, it has a different wavelength, resulting in shallower perforations and less thermal damage.
Downtime is significantly less than CO2. It produces a slight redness that usually subsides within two to three days.
